Travel theme: Height

Not only does Ailsa manage to come up with a challenging travel theme every week, she also gives me a good excuse to look through old photographs and re-live good memories.

This week’s travel theme is Height. Click here to see more entries.

I grew up in Blackpool, which is famous as the home of the Blackpool Tower, among other things. Considering the town was built on reclaimed marshland, anything with any height to it looks incredible to us.

Believe it or not, even though I was born there I didn’t actually go up the tower until I was 18 years old. I actually have a phobia of heights, which I have been slowly trying to get over by forcing myself to face my fear head-on. When I’m travelling, I convince myself to travel to the top of towers and climb to the highest reach because it may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

This attitude has helped me to explore more places on my skis…

I’ve tackled challenges like walking up the Leaning Tower of Pisa (although I think it was the lean more than the height that I had a problem with)…

The city looked beautiful with the mountains in the background

And more recently, I was very proud of myself for completing a high-ropes course – proof that I am definitely more in control of my fears…

    1. Thanks Janet. I didn’t know I could do it either until I got up there! I was very proud of myself, and a bit shaky, when I finished 🙂
